About Us
Immanuel Church is a non-denominational Christian community of people loved by God the Father, brought together and vitally connected to one another through Jesus, and empowered by His Holy Spirit to see His Gospel preached and His Kingdom come on earth as it is in Heaven. We passionately “Sing His Praises, Share His Message and Show His Love.”
We Believe
- The Bible is God-breathed and inspired by His Spirit.
- Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
- Believers’ baptism by immersion in water.
- Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
- Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
- Growing up into maturity in God.
- Coming together to pray.
- Freedom-based, not fear-based giving (i.e. tithing under grace, and generosity in offerings) which is used for promoting the works of ministry and the loving care of those in need.
- We get to live and experience the kingdom of God now as well as look forward to more to come.
Our Culture: What’s Really Important To Us
A culture is essentially a set of beliefs and practices or behaviours embraced by a group of people. The culture which is at the heart of Immanuel is one which seeks to re-present Jesus to a world who seem to have got Him all wrong. His way of doing and being is what we call the Gospel of Jesus and His Kingdom. So the following are really important to us:
- A culture of worship and the presence of God
- A culture of love and honour
- A culture of family and community
- A culture of freedom and transformation
- A culture of grace, power and miracles
- A culture of generous hearts reaching out
Our History
The story of Immanuel Church started in 1984 when Eldred and Denise Engelsman met for the first time in their lounge. Later, for our Sunday meetings, we moved to Atholton Primary School. As the church grew, the need for a church building became important. Amazing instances of prophetic direction and Godly provision led to our current church facility being completed in 2003. Eldred and Denise handed the leadership of the church over in 1999 to Greg and Sue Stevens who lead it today.
Immanuel has now developed into a multi-congregational church which means that, though Immanuel consists of different congregations meeting in different locations, we are one church with one heartbeat, one culture, one value system and one vision. At this point in time, we are five congregations: Somerset Park, Waterloo, Blackburn, Albert Park and Seatides.

Apostolic Partnership
We, as Immanuel Church, relate to Catalyst Connect, an emerging family of churches that we believe God has endorsed to stand alongside every other network and family of churches throughout the earth for the Great Commission’s sake.
We are full of faith to be a family of churches working purposefully together to fulfil Jesus’ Great Commission. We have courage in our bones to equip believers, develop healthy leaders and grow new and existing churches through the apostolic partnerships God gives us. Most of all, may God be glorified, and may His kingdom come and His will be done throughout the earth as it is in heaven.
